Adam Linder is an Senior Lecturer and senior consultant in Infectious Diseases at Lund University Hospital, Lund, Sweden. His research interest lies in epidemiology, early diagnostics, treatment and long-term outcomes of sepsis. He has led two large international multicenter studies evaluating heparin-binding protein (HBP) as a biomarker for early sepsis identification in the emergency department. Also, he is the founder of Sepsisfonden, the Swedish Sepsis Trust and recipient of the 2017 award from the Global Sepsis Alliance.

Johan Malmström is Professor and principal investigator of the Infection Medicine Proteomics group at the Department of Clinical Sciences. He is the node manager for the Lund University node in biolgocial mass spectrometry (BioMS). His research focus is to develop and apply proteomics based techniques to characterize the molecular mechanisms behind invasive bacterial infection. A particular focus is development of new proteomics techniques to investigate protein interactions between host and pathogen and to investigate systemic proteome changes during sepsis.

Oonagh Shannon is Associate Professor in Experimental Infection Medicine and she has a long-standing research interest in understanding the host response to bacteria that breach the bloodstream. During sepsis, these host defence systems become pathologically augmented and deregulated and we develop experimental models to delineate cellular and molecular mechanisms involved. Our investigations are performed at the cellular level but also at the whole organism level in advanced animal models of sepsis.

Pontus Nordenfelt is Assistant Professor and principal investigator of the Quantitative Infection Biology group at Lund University. His research aims to elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial interactions with human cells and to use that information to identify targets for treatment and diagnostics of bacterial infections. The group uses quantitative imaging, protein engineering and various single cell techniques to accomplish their goals.

Thomas Laurell is Professor in Medical and Chemical microsensors and heads the division of Nanobiotechnology at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Lund University. His research utilises miniaturised bioanalytical techniques, lab-on-a-chip, where microchip based biomarker analysis and sample preparation in proteomics is in focus. Current research targets ultrasonic separation and enrichment of cells, bacteria, virus and extracellular vesicles aimed at providing new technology for faster sepsis diagnostics. He has served as president for the global lab-on-a-chip society Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society.

Anders Håkansson is Professor in Experimental Infection Medicine at the Department of Translational Medicine and his group is focused on better understanding how bacteria interact with the host during severe infections such as pneumonia and sepsis. The studies use both in vitro cellular models of bacterial communities (biofilms) to characterise the phenotype of disease-causing bacteria. The aims of this research are to identify novel diagnostic and prognostic markers within the host response, as well as antibacterial targets specifically associated with sepsis.

Niklas Nielsen is a specialist in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Lund University Hospital, Helsingborg, Sweden. His clinical research is focussed on clinical outcome assessment within large multinational randomized trials and biobanks. He has ongoing research projects in 15 countries and is honorary professorial fellow at The George Institute of Global Health in Sydney, Australia working closely with the Australian New Zealand Intensive Care Society - Critical Care Trials Group. He is secretary of the Scandinavian Critical Care Trials Group and on the steering group for SWECRIT (Swedish Critical Care Biobank).

Bo Nilson combines clinical work and research at Clinical Microbiology, Lund University Hospital, Lund. The focus is on application of new technology to improved diagnostics of sepsis and other severe infections. Novel and faster diagnostic methods for the identification of disease causing pathogens are under investigation, with a focus on detection of antibiotic resistance and determination of pathogenicity.
